RESERVE MAQUIPUCUNA CLOUD FOREST & PULULAHUA CRATER

One of the 10 most biodiverse regions in the world.
Exotic flowers, Birds and Butterflies, volcano crater, Mitad del Mundo.

1 DAY TRIP

Our tour leaves Quito at 7 am. Heading north-west, we soon pass MITAD DEL MUNDO “the middle of the world” and PULULAHUA VOLCANO CRATER, and then continue west towards the coast. As we drive to our destination, the Maquipucuna Reserve, we experience a change in vegetation and climate, from a dry cactus-populated region to green mountains and pastures. We will also pass by NANEGALITO, a small countryside town, and finally arrive to MAQUIPUCUNA biological reserve.

Leaving our car behind, we begin our walk in the reserve’s humid cloud forest where you can discover a variety of flowers (2,000 species), trees and other vegetation. Ecuador’s cloud forests also offer the unique opportunity of seeing exotic species of birds (330 species), butterflies, and flowers such as orchids and bromeliads.

Depending on the group’s interest, we choose to take on either the 45 minute or a 2 hour walk to discover the reserve’s biodiversity.

After the walk, we drive to the village of  NANEGAL where we relax and have lunch.

We then drive back to Quito. On the way we stop to have a look at the PULULAHUA volcano crater, where we can enjoy an astonishing view.

For an additional US$ 7.- we can visit the museum “Inti” in Mitad del Mundo. Here you can learn more about the Ecuadorian culture and history. This is where you can also try out some of the interesting experiments to show you the effects that the equator line has.

In the afternoon we will return to Quito and will arrive before 7 pm.
